First job vs. now

First job vs. now

10/01/24

  • I started coding when I was 13 years old. ICSE board schools have that in their curriculum.

  • My designed my first website when I was in 15 to gift my then girlfriend in school.

  • I got paid for building a website during my college years. It was a freelance project for an aviation training academy website. Made some more pocket money by making tools and apps.

  • My first job was as a PHP developer in 2010 in Mumbai and within 2 months I was creating both designs and coding the entire website, FB games as well.

  • When I started my first company, Kria Interactive, I was a front-end developer + designer. I hired some great friends from college to help with backend.

  • In my first job later as a UX designer, I was focusing on designs as well as handling coding emails, QA.

  • Gradually, I transitioned into full-time designer. I don't think I'd have been a great developer anyway :P

  • Today, fourteen years later, I find myself designing hardware. I feel like I just started my career all over again. And… I love it!

You're unlikely to know early in your career which areas of creation you will be best at, which will yield you the best income, which ones will be relevant in the market for long, and which ones will keep you interested.

There's no right place to start. Gain experience in as many different areas as you can. Work outside your comfort zone. Get good at many things, not one thing. When you find the one thing you want to do, everything that came before will inform and enrich it. Then repeat.
