Get work feedback in unusual ways

Get work feedback in unusual ways

Simple acts will help you get feedback more often:

  • Share updates in team meetings, even if they’re not required. Ask specific questions, like “Do you think this aligns with our goals?” You'll get immediate feedback. Even if it's a dull reaction!

  • Instead of waiting for formal 1:1s, ask your manager for a coffee-break, 10-minute walk outside. Or walk with them to pick brain on a specific thing. Managers are more likely to give quick, honest input on-the-go than in a structured setting.

  • Present work to your peers and ask them what your manager might say. They often have insights that can help you prepare before the manager even sees it. You're not playing the system, you're becoming more aware.

  • Send short, periodic notes with updates and a specific question or two on Slack or a DM of your choice. You can catch your manager when they’re focused and likely to reply with direct input.

  • Take something you’re working on — an app feature, a design mockup, anything — and share it with strangers on Reddit, Product Hunt, or Twitter. Don't just post what you release but what you're planning to. You'll get more inputs before you present it for feedback.

  • E.g. Look at how your spouse behaves when ordering food online. That can become one of your sources to bake in insights into the design you're working on. Have a quick chat with your manager about this and your manager may give you some feedback on the method or other areas to observe.

  • Sometimes, just give a call directly and ask if they have a few minutes to talk.

These are unconventional methods but you're more likely to get surprising, little feedback that you won't get otherwise!
